Professor Avalos is Senior Scholar in the Center on Gender Justice & Opportunity at Georgetown University Law Center. She is Professor of Law and holds the Hermann Moyse, Sr. Professorship at Louisiana State University Law Center. During the 2024-2025 academic year, she is a Fulbright Scholar at Queen Mary University London and is also a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies in London, UK.
Her teaching and research interests are in the areas of criminal law and procedure, with an emphasis on sexual offenses and gender-based violence. She has provided training in sexual assault investigation for law enforcement officers through End Violence Against Women International (EVAWI) and for attorneys through the United States Marine Corps. Office of Victims’ Legal Counsel. She is the recipient of EVAWI’s 2023 Visionary Award.
Professor Avalos’s articles have been published in the University of Illinois Law Review, Connecticut Law Review, Case Western Reserve Law Review, Brooklyn Law Review, Nevada Law Journal, Michigan Journal of Gender & Law, Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law, Fordham International Law Journal, and others. She is currently working on a book titled She Must Be Lying to Us! When Reporting Rape Becomes a Crime.
