This event examined the legal system's criminalization of girls and other young survivors of gender-based violence, as well as legislative efforts to disrupt the pipeline.
The Center on Gender Justice & Opportunity and Rights4Girls were delighted to co-host a special event that examined the legal system's criminalization of girls and other young survivors of gender-based violence, as well as legislative efforts to disrupt the pipeline. The discussion was based on our co-authored report, Criminalized Survivors: Today's Abuse to Prison Pipeline for Girls,
We were honored to convene a panel of experts that included:
- Elizabeth Quiroz, a survivor of child sex-trafficking whose sentence was commuted by Governor Jerry Brown and who went on to co-found Redemption House of the Bay Area;
- Rachel de Leon, an investigative journalist whose work uncovering the unfounded arrests of sexual assault survivors is profiled in the Netflix documentary, Victim/Suspect;
- Human Rights for Kids (representative to be determined); and
- Yasmin Vafa, Executive Director of Rights4Girls and co-author of Criminalized Survivors.
- Facilitated by: Rebecca Epstein, Executive Director of the Center on Gender Justice & Opportunity at Georgetown Law and co-author of Criminalized Survivors.
